Back in work – after 15 years at home with the kids
Rachael resigned from her role as a personal assistant 15 years ago, so she could raise her three children and enjoy their early years. She came to Women Like Us fearing that she’d never be able to work again… but we proved her wrong!
When her youngest started primary school, Rachael began to think about finding work and started a City and Guilds qualification in Computer Studies. Rachael then heard about Women Like Us through her son’s school, and registered.
“Doing the City and Guilds helped” says Rachael, “but I didn’t know where to go from there – how do you start a CV after 15 years of not working?”
Rachael received help and guidance from Women Like Us. Career coaches worked with her to figure out what she really wanted to do, gave her advice on practical matters like CV writing and interview skills and, most importantly of all, helped her to build her confidence back up. Rachael applied for two office-based roles following the support – and had job offers from both.
Rachael says: “I was so, so nervous about getting back into work, particularly after the length of my career break. Women Like Us made me realise that a) there are other women out there in the same boat as me and b) I have a wealth of skills and experience at my fingertips that employers actually really value. I am now about to start a fantastic job two days a week as an advisor at a health and social care organisation. I’m really excited about it. Thank you for all your help, Women Like Us!”
