Bringing women and employers together with flexible work

I love keeping fit, so a job as a firefighter really appealed to me. I find I can keep up with the challenges.

Job: Community Fire Safety Officer, Lewisham Borough Team.
Joined: July 2002

Before joining London Fire Brigade, I worked as a school nurse support worker. I loved working within the community but I wanted a more hands on role instead of just being part of a ‘system’, not really knowing the outcome of the client that I had supported.

Working for the LFB as a Community Fire Safety Officer has certainly fulfilled this. I work in a specialist team that educates and supports hard-to-reach and vulnerable young and old people in Lewisham. This is one of the best bits about my job -the opportunity to build relationships, engage and support people from all different backgrounds within the community.

Also, I love keeping fit so a job as a firefighter really appealed to me. I knew I could keep up with the challenges/training that would be asked of me.

My plans for now and the future are to continue to work and study really hard and go for the many opportunities available in the way of promotion. This will stand me in good stead to manage a station of my own.

I would recommend this job to women, as I believe it will give them flexibility and all round job satisfaction, particularly working as part of a team and contributing to the community.

It’s really important that women join the LFB as it will help show that the fire service reflects the communities we serve. It’s great to provide role models for all the young women growing up in London.
